I like to make things…
I didn’t come to this conclusion until my mid-40s, and it has taken many soul-searching seasons to settle comfortably in this simple self-description. Part of the problem was that for much of my adult life, I had been looking for titles and positions to define myself. I was a graphic & motion designer and art director for two decades. I loved to build [Lego], I love photography as a hobby, I attempted a drawing class, and I played around with code arts. I love creating things, yet no titles or industries seem to fit. The best descriptor I found for myself is a creative. Not a professional, not an expert, but just someone who is always looking to create something. Regardless of the medium, the urge is always there.
In the last bit of my life, I’ve also become a pastor, and one of the highlights of my ministry is making disciples. It took a few years for me to figure it out, but through getting my hands on everything in church ministry, the one thing that I realize is the most important thing is discipleship. It is absolutely the main thing. You can have many programs, resources, and fancy buildings, but if the church does not get this intentional, give-your-life-away kind of discipleship, then we are missing the point. This is why we need to help each other get back to that narrow race set out for us; we need to be with Jesus, become more like him, and do as he did (per John Mark Comer.) We need to remind each other to pursue Jesus's lifestyle as a disciple!
And that’s who I am: A disciple who is a work-in-progress, a disciple-maker who wants to fan the flame of faith in others, and someone who is looking to make disciples the way God designed me to do. I create things, I love to play, and I want others to be more like Jesus. If that resonates with you, let’s chat!
